Odex vs Sgfanboys round 2?

Oh joy. It seems that the rumors that the gahmen wants to clamp down on us fansub downloaders are getting serious. It’s a good thing Odex is giving us a heads up warning first.

lolicontrol, tedfox,

I suppose this sort of thing makes for high tension and dorama amongst the anime elite. Yes, it’s probably bad news to the casual anime fans. How much positive light can this bring? It certaily does not equate to more sales for Odex Pte Ltd.

First off. The impression I’m getting is that people don’t buy from odex not because they can download it off the net but because it just isn’t a good enough product on it’s own to be worth the money. Stopping people from downloading does not necessarily equate to more sales for odex. I think I really will laugh when the laws kick in, Blue Max (which sells Naruto and Full Metal Panic) experiences a spike in sales (especially cos Naruto subs are still ongoing), while Odex gets hardly any net difference in turnover. I said it before. This can only be improved by Odex itself improving the goods. You have to make people want to buy, not force them to.

Secondly. People are forgetting that there the causeway effect. Anime isn’t exclusive to Singapore. If free anime is going to be illegal here, there’s always cheap legal anime across the causeway for those who don’t mind the much lower quality. Again, it’s a matter of attracting customers with quality over quantity, I guess. I do admit though, that the Malaysians have their advantages. Though I usually buy my anime from Odex, the Malaysians won me over with a couple of plus points. One, their unbelievably cheap prices, and two, I could buy stuff that I’m not legally allowed to in Singapore. I still don’t see how Melody of Oblivion passed the Muslim Malaysian censors as general but hit Singaporean shelves as NC16. If the Malaysians cut some parts, at least I didn’t notice. The overall effect was still good, and that was what counted.

Already two points why banning downloads will have little positive effect on Odex. Do we have a third? Sure. People forget about anime altogether. This I think is going to be pretty drastic, but I’m pretty sure that it’s the most likely path for roughly 50% or so of the anime community here. (Or worse…) Given that most anime fans are pretty young, or worse, without income, having to buy means that they would rather forget everything altogether. Very unhealthy for everyone involved, except for the gahmen who then have one less thing to regulate…

Sigh. Looks like a bumpy road ahead for all true anime fans. Bunker down people.

Personally, I think that I’ll be hit with a moderate blow. I’m not adverse to buying my anime unlike some people I know (I’m not pointing fingers, seriously.) I do buy good stuff. What I’m unhappy about is that not all the good stuff gets sold. Also new releases like the standard Bittorrent fare from TokyoToshokan and Animesuki. It means that there’s going to be a drastic reorganisation of anime blogging in Singapore. No more episode reviews… ok. No more reviews of the latest anime to hit the world? Now the horror…

Don’t worry. Take a wait and see attitude first. Perhaps they will only chase those people who STUPIDLY download stuff that’s already on sale here. Truth be told though, people like tj_han and Tsubaki will easily survive anime downloader purges. Such is the extent of their specialisation. Me? Wait and see. I definitely won’t abandon my faithfull readers though.

Er…??? What’s this???

Yestersay, I went back to the animenano User CP to check the status of my blog submission to my blog submission entry. I kinda got a shock when I noticed that the screen that normally shows the status had reverted to the original submission form.

Now, yes, I am sure that this is not a mistake on my part. I know very well that I submitted that form a few weeks back. I also am very sure that until yesterday, I’ve been seeing “Your entry is being processed” or something along those lines in the same page.

So…now the million dollar question is…what exactly does this mean?

I’ve thought of a few possibilities. 1, it’s a perfectly normal system error or glitch and all I have to do is to resubmit the form… 2, my entry has been rejected…I don’t quite like that one too… 3, OMG, hung is being lazy and has swept all the work on his desk straight into the recycle bin!!!

Ok, fine I’m getting paranoid on the last point, but the big problem is that I really have no way of knowing what is going on. Can someone help me out there a little?

O levels are over, I’m back.

Yes, I’m back now. 16 years old have finished their exams…but my brain is a mess. What more, my desktop has decided to take this very crucial period to bl0ow up on me, so I can’t watch any anime at all now…

Yup, so no article today. I’ll talk about something else besides anime then…

Ok, I got it. Let’s see, how do you readers find links for your blogroll. Do you like to have a huge list or a simple, exclusive one?

See, recently, I’ve been finding that people I don’t know have been adding me to their blogrolls. I only find out about this when someone comes over to my side from their’s. Not that I’m against this, the extra hits are welcome, but it’s a little surprising. Are they followers of my irregularly produced articles then? Because personally, I wouldn’t really just put someone on my blogroll just paf, like that, without observing him for a while, checking to see if it really is wise to associate with him/her. Sometimes, I’ll add that person immediatly if he’s a big name, e.g tj_han’s RIUVA, but that’s about it. Really, given my daily hits, I wonder if I’m even noticed at all…

Sigh…oh well. That doesn’t mean I don’t want people to link to me. Go ahead if you want. Oh, and tell me if you do, so I can link back.

Haruhiism should not be blind

Filed under: Rants, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

For those of you who read drmchsr0’s anti-Haruhiism diatribe, and those who didn’t…

I think I should truly agree with him. Not that I want to insult people. Just want to caution them againt taking things too far. (To DarkMirage: No! Absolutely nothing against you. You have every right to go ahead and record Haruhiism in history via Yahoo. I’m not here to stop you…)

It’s just a little thing from experience. Last Saturday, I went down to Kinokuniya Bugis to buy what I believed to be a Haruhi artbook. Yes, I worked 2 and a half hours to earn the money to afford it…

Turns out the book WASN’T a Haruhi artbook. It was, quote: The Official Haruhi Suzumiya Fan Book. Presented by SOS-dan. End quote. Oh, I s feel like crying now…Well, here are the pics. Forgive my poor phototaking…

Front cover…

Have to admit, it does come with some pretty cool art…

Like this foldout poster…

And these too…

Few more coloured extras, like character reviews…

TSURUYA SAN! In the yakisoba cafe outfit!!!

…and yes, episode reviews too…

Now here’s where all the trouble begins…

Seiyuu interviews!…in Japanese…

Kyon!!…the guy in white is Itzumi

…also in Japanese…some stuff I can’t make head or tail out of…

*Totally unreadable…*

And the fact that the whole thing is in Japanese kinda spoils it…was wondering why an artbook would be so cheap…

Now, I’ve got two choices. (Actually alot more, but the others are unpalatable, and involve a net loss of property and value…) I could keep this nice little Japanese book, or I could try sell it to someone. Aurabolt suggested trying DarkMirage, given he’s a huge Haruhi fan and he also lives in Singapore, so I can save of shipping costs.

Well, I’ll think about it. Anyone who REALLY wants to buy this off me, go ahead and contact me or something. Applicable to Singaporeans only. Yes, I’m like tj_han. Lazy and selfish when it comes to shipping…

I’m Chinese through and through, but this is going too far…

Rant of the day, or perhaps a long, long time, given that I’m probably going to be stuck with this problem for a long, long time…

Damn my ability to read, write, speak Chinese. Is it a blessing or a curse. Yes, all non-Chinese are going to raise the issue of Taiwanese manga.

For those who are slow: Current NT:SGD rate is 20:1. So NT100 = SGD5. Some of the Taiwan books aren’t even NT100. This means that Taiwanese manga is dirt cheap. Not as dirt cheap as in Japan, but still compared to everywhere else, super cheap.

In that case, what happens to the price after the lot is transported here to Singapore? Yes, the price goes up. What I want to know is how much profit is involved. The average selling price for Taiwan manga (without the varying membership discounts from shop to shop) is around SGD8 at least to SGD15, though most are around 9 dollars. That’s about twice the cost price. Minus certain fees and all that, how much profit is there?

All this calculation on the low value of Taiwanese manga is really making me want to go there for no other reason then a manga shopping spree…

Hiatus? Maybe…

Eh, yes, I might not be around for a while. So maybe I won’t be putting up any new posts, until mid-November maybe. Could be gone awhile. all because of the exam, see.

In other news. I want to rant against the Indonesians…Just give me a line or two, won’t take long. CAN’T YOU GUYS DO ANYTHING ABOUT THE HAZE?!!! I INTEND TO KEEP AS MANY OF MY BRAIN CELLS AS POSSIBLE! DON’T KILL THEM WITH YOUR GIANT BONFIRES!!

In any case, I’ve been going through quite a bit of manga recently. I’ve taken the time to go through almost 10 books of Shin Angyo Onshin. Mistake. Do not read Shin Angyo Onshin when you are tittering into depression. It’s not exactly very happy a series. It was just so emotional, and not just because certain people die and all that. It’s one big bandwagon of disillusionment in a country fallen into chaos…But enough of that. I want to read more before going on.

Also, in response to the latest hype over the new D-Grayman anime, I went over to the bookshop to read the manga. It caught my eye before, but not enough until now. Well, what can I say. It’s WAY better than Bleach at least. The art can get slightly messy, especially during action scenes, but that’s very well made up for by the sheer emotional play inside (which was sorely lacking in Bleach…). Also, it also pawns Bleach thanks to this simple equation. Linali>Orihime. Don’t kill me for that…

It’s Fall, apparently, that’s why the excitement…

Sorry. Living in a forever sunny tropical paradise means that I do not keep track of the seasons like many of the poor fellas shivering their way through winter. Thus I do not keep track of new, upcoming anime based on seasons. (I can also go on and say that this applies to movies, fashion and so on, but those are irrevelant.)

As a result, I am at a loss about what big anime serieses are coming soon that no small amount of hype is accumulating over.

Well, my list of ‘Things to look out for’ (for however long fall lasts) is pretty simple. Kekaishi, Deathnote…erm, what else? Is Le Chevalier D’eon counted as a fall release? Possibly Busou Renkin, though I kinda found it a little out of taste. (Personally, the manga wasn’t that great, the cover was initially appealling, but something halfway through the series put me off.)
In any case, there are a couple of factors that have numbed me to whatever goodness is supposed to be popping up on radar soon. One my exams. Self-explanatory. Two, due to a slump in anime releases, alot of the stuff I’ve been seriously intending to follow are still a long way from completion. FLAG, Hanoka, NHK ni Youkosou, and Innocent Venus. All either still taking off or at least not yet in sight of the finish line. That has been a big drawback which recently pushed me to go into J-pop for a while.

So I guess it’s going to be a slow three months for me. While everyone else is going on about how the latest series is either absolutely fantastic or an absolute flop, I’ll me stuck at home mugging away. Well, at least it’s only three months.

WARNING: The following is mainly abusive rant that has accumulated due to stress. If you happen to like certain upcoming serieses, you may not be happy to see this.

Ok, first up. Busou Renkin. Maybe I am prejudiced, but something in the manga put me off. I’m not sure if it was a certain scene/item, or was it just the overall sense of complcent boredom and lack of excitement. Makes me wonder if it’s actually possible for the anime itself to fare well.

Next. WTF! A new POKEMON series! You gotta be kidding. The whole thing has been milked so dry it’s worse off than Australia! Ditto for Digimon, although I do admit that crappy graphics and cliches aside, it does have certain redeeming points.

Then there’s also something about Rockman. It’s not something I’ll be looking forward much to. Generally, from part experiences, game-to-anime productions are no big deal.

There, see? I didn’t take the time to rant out against anything but the kiddy shows. Though I’m off to go read D-Grayman manga. If I don’t like it, I’ll be back.
